#1 Grade Treated Southern Yellow Pine (KDAT)
Treated Pine Pergolas are built of #1 Grade Southern Yellow Pine that has been pressure treated to prevent decay and insect attack. The wood is "KDAT" (kiln dried after treatment), as with all of our treated wood products, to ensure that it remains flat and does not bow or twist. The procedure also restricts the amount of checking that can be done (small hairline cracks that will appear on unfinished wood when the surface dries over time). To keep the wood clean and neat, we recommend that you seal it every one or two years, depending on where you live. If you want a more rustic look, you can let it gray while still keeping the weather protection. It's also possible to dye or paint treated pine. Since KDAT is drier than most store-bought treated lumber, it can be painted up to a year after purchase. Most store-bought treated lumber cannot be painted for up to a year after purchase, but you can paint KDAT right away because it is drier than most store-bought treated lumber.
Treated Pine Posts
We use laminated posts for our pergolas. Four 2x6s are glued together to make these posts. This approach is much more powerful than using a single 6x6, which has a tendency to warp or twist over time.
After that, the posts are sanded and the corners are squared, resulting in finished posts that are 512" square.
